What does a treatment involve?
A first MLD or massage session will involve a consultation. There are a few medical conditions for which these are contraindicated, and some others that need to be taken into consideration. I will ask you for a relevant medical history and questions about your reason for seeking treatment, so that I can identify the most appropriate way to proceed. If you are considering a course of CDT it is normal procedure to inform your GP to establish that there are no reasons why this should not go ahead.
A massage treatment usually lasts about one hour, and longer sessions, e.g. for a whole body massage, are available. An MLD treatment can be up to 1½ hours, and some stages of CDT treatment longer. Chair massages are about 20 minutes.
People are often, understandably, concerned that massage might be painful. There are a number of factors which affect how a massage is perceived, and whilst it may be briefly painful when working on an established problem area, this is usually felt as a ‘good’ releasing pain. Manual lymph drainage is never painful.
How often you should have a massage will depend on your individual requirements, but MLD works best as an intensive treatment, with sessions initially taken close together, and CDT takes on average 14-21 daily sessions, again depending on your own needs.
If you have any questions or would like more information about what a massage or MLD treatment may involve, please do not hesitate to contact me.
